Op de deviezenmarkten legde de coronacrisis heel wat onderliggende problemen bloot de afgelopen twee maanden. Munten uit opkomende economieën kregen te kampen met zware koersverliezen, door het stilvallen van de economie, maar ook de vlucht naar dollars – dé safe haven bij uitstek – zorgde voor rake klappen. De nakende presidentsverkiezingen in de VS hebben Trump ertoe aangezet om de vete met handelspartner China terug aan te wakkeren, wat nog meer onzekerheid voor munten uit exportgerichte economieën inhoudt.
Voor de euro was het de interne keuken die druk op de ketel zette. De EU en de solidariteit van diens lidstaten werd op de proef gesteld. Het politieke spanningsveld rond de financiering van een gezamenlijke schuld in de eurozone, trok de euro omlaag.
In het Verenigd Koninkrijk vielen de onderhandelingen naar een handelsovereenkomst met de EU stil, door toedoen van COVID-19. Het VK werd echter met de neus op de feiten gedrukt, toen duidelijk werd dat de aanpak niet volstond en het aantal besmettingen sterk toenam. Nu de Brexit-top met de EU27 – die voor juni gepland staat – nadert, stapelen ook hier de onzekerheden zich op.
